It has been evident that due to the active substances in cannabis, there are many health benefits to those who consume it, especially through smoking. But the drug can also invoke symptoms of dependence in those people with regular use. According to a recent clinical trial, the medicines having cannabis as a base would be safer and also oppose dependence on the drug.
As per the reports from the National Institute on Drug Abuse, 30% of the people in US who use cannabis in some form, have marijuana use disorder to some extent. A person wants to consume the drug, when they experience withdrawal symptoms including poor appetite, irritability and sleep problems, in case they don’t have the drug. The research team from the Ministry of Health from New South Wales and the University of Sydney says that the current treatments for dependence are not enough.
The researchers tested a new medicine drug which is said to be better working in treating the drug dependence. In the clinical testing, the team analyzed the safety and effectiveness of the drugs. It is said to be a cannabinoid agonist drug having extracts of cannabis. It works when it interacts with the cannabinoid receptors of the brain.
The trial was conducted by Prof. Nick Lintzeris and his research team on 128 volunteers- 98 men and 30 women- with average age being 35 years. All of them were consuming cannabis and had taken treatment for dependence on the drug, but failed to control their drug use. They were given nabiximols medication for 12 weeks. They took the drug through a spray under the tongue; 18 sprays were given to one volunteer and one spray consisting of 2.5 mg of cannabidiol and 2.7 mg of tetrahydrocannabinol.
Prof. Lintzeris said that they were not aware about the medication being effective in cannabis dependence, and that this is big study for the first time that is effective as well as safe to use.
